LEARNING & EDUCATION

Carol Kaye - Thank you Carol Kaye.  The most recorded electric bassist in history also happens to be the best electric bass instructor in the world! Even though I play 99% finger style and she's 100% a pick player, I still learned more from Carol Kaye than all other instructors combined and squared.   This started when I bought her "How To Play Electric Bass"  which was the first manual that ever really helped me after years of being "lost in the wilderness in Northeast Georgia."  I didn't have any idea who she was back then, in fact I didn't want to believe this person was a female,  but I have a nice collection of her materials now.  Whenever I get to the point I think I am a decent player and know it all, I drag out some of her many recordings or study materials and find out how much I really still have to learn.  She is the living American treasury of bass knowledge.  You can order her books, DVD's and CD's HERE and once on that page select "CD'S, DVDS, BOOKS" or "ACCESSORIES" in the drop down menu box which first displays the word "Catalog" when the page first opens.  Her site has an excellent forum too.     TIP:  Sometimes she sells her tutorial materials on eBay under eBay user ID "sdf495ok" for just a shade cheaper than on her website.  It doesn't matter where you buy it, just buy it.  Her website also has an interesting forum.  This site is in part a tribute to my favorite instructor and another way I can express my respect, admiration and appreciation to Carol Kaye.  I am so grateful.  I can not tell you how sucky I'd be without her.

Wheat's Bass Book - One of the best online resources for self study.   Concise yet thorough.  A good basic primer and you need to know everything in Wheat's Bass Book.

Electric Bass Guitar Fingering Chart (Four String) -  Not exactly secret information but a very concise printable presentation.  If you learn this then half the reading standard notation battle is over!

Andrew Pouska's Study Bass - Free Online Bass Lessons.  Mr. Pouska is a very knowledgeable and talented instructor who isn't stingy about sharing online free.  Very nice tools on his site including an online metronome.  An excellent learning and home practice resource.

Active Bass - Online Community bass oriented website with online lessons, recording tools and much more.

Beginning BASSics - Takes you from the "I think I wanna play bass" stage to playing bass on a stage.  Free, but will accept a donation if you feel generous.

Harmony Central Bass Lessons - Top gear review site offers some Slapping, Tapping and music theory lessons.

Harmony Central Bass Instruction - A list of online resources, many dead links here, but a few good ones still work.  I especially like the two part guest column, "Running With The Bass"  by Cliff Suttle.

Bass Guitar Scales - Full array of scales for electric bass.

Bass Boulevard's Theory Page - Excellent concise basic theory definitions.  Intervals, Modes, Scales, Circle of Fifths.  All those terms and others defined.  Menu to theory elements is on the right hand side of this page.  Not very in-depth, but look it over to see how much you don't know.

Vision Music BOTTOMLINE BASS lessons -  A few free lessons then pay to play beyond that.  Pretty well done.

Key Signatures - Concise general overview of a complicated topic by Catherine Schmidt-Jones.

Bass & Treble Clef Explained - Fast way to learn notes on both clefs by Catherine Schmidt-Jones.  Bassists need to know how to read both clefs since you often can only find treble clef charts.

Start Reading Music - From Music Mind and Amy Applebee.  Concentrates on the treble clef, but again knowing treble clef is also important for those times there is no bass notation available, which seems to happen to me a lot.

The Bass Clef - From JazClass comes this excellent site on reading bass clef.
